Ways To Maintain Brakes

Winter is almost over and you’re looking forward to warmer weather, but as you steer your way around extensive craters, you can’t help but cringe at every pothole. It’s fabulous that summer is just around the corner, but right now the alarming squeal coming from the left-hand side and the quake of the steering wheel take in your full attention. Performing periodic brake maintenance will help keep you from ever hearing this sound and save you some embarrassment as you head through town. Having your brakes working accurately is a must, for your own safety, as well as your loved ones.

Brake maintenance is a very crucial aspect of your vehicle’s routine inspection. A few warning signs to remember are:

Either a grinding or squealing sound when brakes are applied.
Your vehicle does it seem to pull to the right or left?
The front end does it shake or the steering wheel vibrate?
If the ABS light is lit on the dashboard a good chance that the sensors on the wheel have detected metal shavings from your brake system.
Most systems are made to shut down ABS when this occurs. Your vehicle will still stop during braking so don’t worry; only the ABS feature itself is damaged. Here is a few helpful things to guide you with your brake maintenance:

Have a certified technician pull the wheels off and have a look once a year
Part of your brake maintenance should include flushing and replacing brake fluid every two years. After a duration of two years, fluid will turn acidic.
Check your owners manual and find out what brakes your vehicle needs, and how they shall be adjusted. Most drum brakes are self-adjusting.
No matter what the condition, it is highly recommended to replace brakes every 25,000 – 30,000 miles.
